For 'Silent World' (‘Verstilde Wereld’ in Dutch) I spoke with dementia sufferers and their families, therapists, caregivers and scientists. With compassion I have tried to describe the different symptoms and variations of this brain disorder. What changes? How do people deal with loss and care? What do research scientists say about the importance of a stimulating environment in which art, music and smell can stir the senses?
'Silent World' follows the progress of the disease, from the first forgotten bunch of keys to the quiet final days. The book provides an overview for those affected by this brain disorder, either personally or in their surroundings.
“The portraits in this book have touched my heart.”
